Pennsylvania National Horse Show Adds New Scholarship Program to Long List of Junior Weekend Highlights

The Pennsylvania National Horse Show looks forward to being the end goal for many of the top Junior riders in the country. Featuring national championships in individual and team Junior Jumpers, the Medal Finals and regular Junior hunter divisions, the show will now also be the site of four scholarship awards for Junior Hunter riders. This year’s show will be held Oct. 9-18 with Junior competition featured Oct. 9-12.

Known as “Junior Weekend,” the first four days of the Pennsylvania National Horse Show feature only Junior and pony competitions and even provides a special exhibitor lounge just for Juniors. Sponsored by USHJA Zone 5 (Winner of the Prix des States Team championship in 2012 and 2013) the “Rock Star Room” is conveniently located just off the main schooling ring and offers junior riders a place to relax and grab a drink or snack before or after schooling, to and from the ring or on their way back to the hotel after the evening’s competition. Site of the Junior Jumper “Grab and Go” on Friday evening and the Medal School hospitality available all night Saturday evening, the Rock Star Room provides just the right spot to recharge and relax.

Recognizing that Junior riders aren’t the only ones in need of a space to call their own, the Pennsylvania National Horse Show will also feature the “Parents’ Zone” on Friday, Oct. 10. Available all day and throughout the evening’s Prix des States Team championship, the Parents’ Zone will be available on the Sponsor Balcony overlooking the main ring. Parents can sit at tables, relax and cheer on their Juniors. Sponsored by the USHJA, the Parents’ Zone will provide drinks and light snacks to parents throughout the day’s competition.

“Junior Weekend is supported in part by our sponsors and the more sponsors we have the more we can offer,” said Liz Shorb, president of the Pennsylvania National Horse Show. “Sponsorship opportunities are available for breakfasts, ice cream snacks, lunches, and apples and carrots at the in gate and all these opportunities can all be found on our website, www.PAnational.org.”

In addition to the Parents’ Zone, also new this year will be the Claire Mawdsley Scholarships. One scholarship will be awarded in each of the four Junior Hunter divisions to the top eligible rider based on their cumulative scores over fences. Ribbons will also be presented to the top three eligible exhibitors in each division.

Rules and eligibility requirements can be found at www.PAnational.org under the tab for “Exhibitors and Entries.” Eligible riders must enter in advance.

Spearheaded by trainer Tom Brennan of Winter Hill Farm, the Claire Mawdsley Scholarships were created to honor rider and student Claire Mawdsley, who was lost in a car accident in September 2011. At the time of the accident, Claire was a 21-year-old senior at Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Virginia, where she was majoring in Equine Studies. Donations to the Scholarship can be made to PNHS FOUNDATION – CLAIRE MAWDSLEY SCHOLARSHIP, 720 Limekiln Road, New Cumberland, PA 17070.

“This year’s Junior Weekend will be packed full of entertaining competition, great shopping and lots of special events, awards and hospitality for our Junior riders,” said Shorb. “We look forward to welcoming the Juniors and their families and spectators to Harrisburg, the year-end destination.”
