FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — MARCH 30, 2012 — Supporting its mission of advocating for animal health and welfare programs everywhere, Omega Fields® has eagerly agreed to be the sponsor of the April PEP! Star, a program recognizing children who make positive impacts on the welfare of animals in their communities or pets in their homes. Winners of this award are given special PEP! prize packages and are featured on the PEP! website, www.ilovepep.org/.

PEP! (Pet Education Project) is an educational and outreach program whose mission is to teach children the fundamental responsibilities of owning pets. Its ambitious goal is to end pet overpopulation, neglect and abuse through education. Using fun and interactive teaching methods involving actual animals, puppets, and costumed actors, children are taught such topics as spaying and neutering, euthanasia, basic pet care, and accountability for the creatures that come into their lives.

The April PEP! Star prize package will include an Omega Fields Canine & Companion Gift Set consisting of Omega-3-rich, stabilized, ground flaxseed supplements for dogs and their human caretakers, along with PEP! wristbands, water bottle, and other PEP! logo items.

Omega Fields will also be sponsoring an upcoming month’s PEP! Star Coloring Contest. The contest is for children in three age ranges, with the winners receiving Omega Fields’ canine supplements and treats.

The Pet Education Project was conceived by Erica Callais of Shreveport, Louisiana, in 2009. It carries out its mission through PEP! Talks to classrooms, PEP! Rallies to larger school and community groups, week-long summer camps, appearances at kid-oriented events, and through its website. PEP! is funded through a generous grant from the Pepsi Refresh Project (initially) and from private donations through the PEP! website and PEP! Rallies.

Since 2009 more than 16,000 children have received the PEP! message concerning pet welfare, with hundreds of Rallies and Talks being given in 2011 alone.

The organization is rapidly expanding beyond Shreveport, having given presentations as far away as Maryland and Canada, and receiving interest in opening branches in other states. The first branches will be opening in Colorado Springs, CO, and Monroe, LA, this summer and a Nebraska city is very interested in establishing a PEP! branch.

PEP! is currently run by an all-volunteer staff consisting of Erica; Sue Sandifer, Director; Stacey Taylor, secretary; and many other volunteers serving the various roles of PEP! Talk presenters, therapy pet handlers, puppeteers, crafters, and event helpers. If you would like to be a volunteer and live in the Shreveport, LA area, call (318) 278-7543 or go online to www.ilovepep.org/get-involved.html.

PEP! is also looking for nominations each month to become the next PEP! Star. If you know a child who is PEP! Star material, lead them to the PEP! website, www.ilovepep.org/pep-star.html, to learn how to apply.
