Managing Horse Herd Health

Streamline herd health by grouping horses with similar needs, tracking care, and tailoring plans for nutrition, biosecurity, vaccines, and deworming.

Caring for a variety of horses requires more than routine checkups—it calls for structured wellness plans that balance individual needs with efficient group care. When horses vary in age, workload, and health, a strategic approach helps ensure every horse stays healthy while barn operations run smoothly.

Group Horses With Similar Needs

In large barns digital record-keeping, set protocols, and organized routines can make wellness planning more manageable. Grouping horses with similar needs—such as foals, seniors, adults at maintenance, and performance horses—helps barn managers apply consistent care strategies while still meeting each demographic’s unique needs.

“Balancing efficiency and individualized care is crucial in a multihorse setting,” says Chelsie Huseman, PhD, assistant professor and extension specialist at Texas A&M University, in College Station. Accurate, up-to-date, well-organized, and easily accessible records support these strategies by simplifying nutrition planning and scheduling for veterinary visits and dental care.

Horse Herd Vaccination and Deworming Strategies

Different ages, activity levels, and competition/travel schedule can dictate different care. For example, young horses are more susceptible to roundworms (ascarids), and seniors often have weaker immunity.. “I recommend grouping horses by similar risk profiles for deworming and vaccinations, and keeping meticulous records,” says Huseman.

Work with your veterinarian to develop a region-specific vaccination plan and deworming strategy based on fecal egg counts (FECs) to improve cost-efficiency.

Biosecurity in Barns With Multiple Horses

Managers of barns with frequent arrivals and departures must prioritize biosecurity to reduce disease risk. “Effective biosecurity begins with a strict 14-day quarantine for new or returning horses,” Huseman explains.

Beyond quarantine she recommends minimizing direct contact between horses arriving from other farms or returning from competitions to reduce exposure without isolating them completely. Confirming new horses are up to date on necessary vaccines and deworming will also help strengthen biosecurity.

Feeding a Diverse Herd

Feeding multiple horses with varying nutritional needs can quickly become complex. Again, grouping horses by demographic simplifies the process. Barn managers can create feeding programs for easy keepers, seniors, and performance horses, then monitor body condition scores (BCS) to determine whether they are meeting the animals’ energy needs.

“Start by consulting a nutritionist to establish baseline plans for each group,” Huseman says.

As seasons and workloads shift, work with an equine nutritionist to adjust feed to reflect changes in metabolic needs. A balanced low-starch base ration or ration balancer works well for many horses and helps streamline feeding while covering essential vitamin and mineral requirements. For horses with other nutritional needs, you can add additional components to this base ration.

Take-Home Message

Managing herd health doesn’t mean sacrificing individualized care. By grouping horses with similar needs, keeping detailed records, and working closely with veterinarians and nutritionists, barn managers can streamline daily routines while supporting each horse’s well-being. Strategic planning around vaccination, deworming, nutrition, and biosecurity helps reduce risk, improve efficiency, and ensure all horses receive appropriate, consistent care.
