Zinpro Corporation, the industry leader in performance trace mineral nutrition for equine, livestock, poultry, aquaculture and companion animals, today announced that Dr. Robert J. (Bob) Coleman, PhD, was honored with the 2020 Equine Science Award by the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) and Equine Science Society (ESS). The award is given to honorees who make outstanding contributions to equine research, agribusiness, extension and education.

Coleman is an equine specialist at the University of Kentucky, where he teaches and advises in the equine science and management program and is the advisor for the University’s equestrian team. He also serves on the American Quarter Horse Association’s research committee and is a board member of the Midwest American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists. Additionally, he is the executive director of the ESS and president-elect for the Certified Horsemanship Association.

In July 2020, he was awarded the Equine Science Award at the 2020 ASAS and Canadian Society of Animal Science virtual annual meeting and trade show. He is the 12th recipient of the award, which Zinpro has sponsored since 2008. In 2019, Coleman was awarded the ASAS Distinguished Teacher Award.

“Throughout his career, Dr. Coleman has epitomized the love of horses, people, research and education,” says Connie Larson, PhD, associate director – global technical services for Zinpro. “He’s been exceptional in shaping a positive future for the equine industry and the people who serve it, and we are honored to have been the sponsor for this recognition.”

Coleman earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in animal science from the University of Manitoba and his doctorate in equine nutrition from the University of Alberta. He was the extension horse specialist for Alberta Agriculture from 1980-1998. In 1998, he moved to the University of Kentucky, where he oversees all adult equine extension activities.
