July 17, 2013 — Kauffman’s Animal Health Inc. manufactures a complete line of electrolyte supplements formulated to meet the challenging demands of a variety of equine athletes across a broad range of disciplines.

All animals, including equines, require a complex balance of electrolytes. The balance of electrolytes affects and regulates the hydration of the body, blood pH, and is critical for healthy nerve and muscle function.

Electrolyte balance is affected by a variety of factors the biggest of which are environmental and physical demands. Most horse owners are aware of the effects of heat and humidity on their horse’s body, but there must be considerations to the balance of electrolytes in cold harsh weather. In addition to environmental factors it is necessary to replace the balance of electrolytes based on the physical demands of the horse. These physical demands should include age, stress level and exercise intensity.

In equines, the primary ions of electrolytes are sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and chloride. These ions are essential to maintain a healthy balance for optimal health.

Dextrose (sugar) is not an electrolyte and is sometimes added to electrolyte supplements in order to enhance taste and consumption, sugar should not be the major ingredient in an electrolyte. Buyers beware.

Kauffman’s offers presentations of electrolytes in the following options:

  • Hydromax 10 pound pail, 35 pound pail, 50 pound pail, 50 pound bag.
  • Hydromax paste 60 cc oral dose syringe, (4) 15 cc feedings.
