The University of Guelph offers an online Equine Biosecurity Risk Calculator for horse properties. The Calculator requires you to answer a series of 42 questions in 10 categories and will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
Biosecurity takes in management practices that reduce the chances that infectious disease will be carried onto or spread from or within a farm or facility, noted Equine Guelph. The university noted that the most common way infectious diseases are spread in the equine industry are when new horses are introduced into a resident herd.
The Calculator is an educational resource of Equine Guelph (part of the University of Guelph) developed in partnership with Colorado State University and the American Association of Equine Practitioners. The Calculator is sponsored by Vétoquinol Canada Inc. This tool provides information on equine health, infectious disease and infectious disease control.
Once you complete the questionnaire and find out how your farm rated you can learn ways to improve the areas that are at risk.
Equine Guelph notes that the information presented in the Calculator is for educational purposes only. It should not be used for the diagnosis or management of disease, and it should not replace information from your veterinarian.
