Are You Presidential in Your Equine Business?

Yesterday was President’s Day. You might have celebrated, been off from your “day” job or pretty much ignored it altogether (except for no mail or bank service). But did it give you pause to think about the fact that you are (more than likely) the president of your equine farm or stable?

Do you act presidential (in the good sense)? Are you setting the goals and objectives of your business and delegating to see that they get done correctly? Do you look out for the potential threats to your business and make plans on how to combat those pitfalls? Do you look for potential in your area or industry and take a leadership role? Are you truly serving the needs of your constituents (boarders)?

Stop for a moment and take a big picture look at your business. Back off from the day-to-day work that you do in your farm or stable and give yourself time to work on (instead of in) that business.

Get your strategic plan in place and get buy-in from anyone who works for you or whom you serve. Make sure you are planning for more than the next load of hay or shipment or feed.

And if your business is running smoothly, successfully and profitably, take a moment to go to Camp David (or the barn) and enjoy your “country.” After all, that’s why we do this every day…even on holidays.
