Horse Poop Needed for Research Data Base

Do you have a metabolic, easy keeper or perceived normal horse with persistent health and lameness problems? Do you have a horse that is prone to GI upset, colic or ulcers? Supply us with some horse poop and maybe we can help yield some insight!

Dr. Tom Schell and the team at Nouvelle Research, Inc. are investigating the impact of bacterial shifts within the feces of horses and the subsequent impact on health and lameness. For decades, we have known that in certain horses as a result of environmental problems, stress and feed changes that the bacterial population can shift, but we haven’t looked at this problem in the everyday horse.

In a small preliminary research trial in metabolic horses prone to laminitis, Schell discovered an increase in population of a certain bacteria type that might be contributing to inflammatory patterns within the patient. This pattern appears to be consistent, but unresponsive to traditional ‘stomach’ oriented products, antibiotics and probiotics, but it is responsive to a different approach, yielding some interesting improvements in the patients.

The data is still too early, but this is why we need your help!

We are accepting feces from normal or abnormal horses. Metabolic or non-metabolic. Lame or sound, healthy or unhealthy. We need to establish a good data base with a range of horses in order to determine what is significant and what is not. We also need to correlate with concurrent diet regimen and supplementation, determining hopefully a better means of managing these patients.

The fecal analysis is free of charge and a summary will be provided to you indicating bacterial trends noted, indications of absorption problems and a fecal parasite egg count. At the very least, the results will give you a good idea how your deworming program is going.

If you would like to relieve your daily barn burden of a few fecal balls, please contact Schell by email at tschelldvm@gmail.com. Further details will be provided upon email contact.

We greatly appreciate your help, and together, maybe we can resolve some issues.
